Case Study: Things Fall Apart Then Everything Breaks

As a Team Lead you have access to all maintenance data for all the manufacturing equipment your team maintains. Part of your duties includes monitoring maintenance records to keep track of any trends in equipment down-time or increased maintenance costs.

You’ve been reviewing your maintenance records and notice a trend in down-time for several different machines. The machines are fairly new and receive normal usage. You review your team’s work logs and discover that they are performing excessive amounts of repair for the same machines.  You take a closer look and see that your technicians appear to be replacing the same several parts over and over again.

You have a meeting with your technicians and discuss this issue. The consensus is that the technicians are replacing several parts on a fairly regular basis, and these parts are in hard to get locations requiring an excess amount of down time. There appears to be no reason for the repeated failure of these parts, and it only started occurring a few months ago.

Your supervisor is demanding an answer as to why you’re manufacturing machinery down-time is increasing, maintenance overtime salary is increasing, and you’re replacing the same parts on a recurring basis.

Your technicians and supervisors are looking to you as the Subject Matter Expert to solve this problem.
